The Best Age for Newborn Photography – Advice from a Warwickshire Baby Photographer

The short answer: within the first 5 to 14 days after birth. But let’s dive into the “why” behind that sweet spot—and how choosing the right timing (and the right photographer!) makes all the difference in preserving those early memories.

Newborn sessions are ideally done within the first 5–14 days after birth, and early booking helps us reserve a flexible date around your due date. However, if your baby has already arrived or you're close to your due date—don’t worry! Please still get in touch, as I occasionally have last-minute openings and will do my best to fit you in.

Why the First Two Weeks Are Ideal for Newborn Photography

As a Warwickshire baby photographer working with families for over 10 years! I’ve found that babies tend to be sleepier, snugglier, and more flexible in the first two weeks of life. This is the magical window where we can capture those iconic, curled-up poses that melt your heart.

During this time:

  • Babies sleep deeply and often, making those dreamy, peaceful portraits possible.

  • They’re more easily soothed and swaddled, ensuring a relaxed, safe experience.

  • Their delicate features—like tiny fingers, button noses, and fuzzy hair—are still brand new.

Booking in your newborn photoshoot.

It’s always best to book your newborn photoshoot at least one month before your due date to ensure availability and allow time to plan your perfect session.

Bendy Babies.

Babies are incredibly flexible , especially within the first two weeks of life. During this time, their little bodies are still adapting to the world outside the womb, and their joints and bones haven't fully fused yet. This remarkable flexibility allows them to easily curl up into those adorable tucked-up poses that are so iconic in newborn photography. Their natural inclination to curl up is not only precious to behold but also makes it easier to wrap them snugly in soft fabrics, enhancing the cozy and adorable aesthetic of newborn portraits. So, whether they're nestled in a blanket or cradled in your arms, these early days provide the perfect opportunity to capture the unique charm and how tiny they are in all their tucked-up glory
